The Mitsio archipelago

Of the fourteen islands that make up the archipelago, you will first notice the Quatre Freres (four brothers), frozen sentries kindly sheltering flocks of colorful and noisy seabirds, white terns, frigate birds ... The only permanently inhabited island and the most important is the Grande Mitsio (Great Mitsio). Witness of History and symbol of the fight of the Antankarana people against the Merina conquest in the 19th century, it shelters a remarkable geological formation composed of organ pipe shaped basaltic rocks . A group of four smaller islands face the Grande Mitsio. The closest seams to glitter, it is Tsarabanjina with its dazzlingly white coral sand beaches.

The fifth brother

Since the dawn of time, five brothers guarded the Mitsio archipelago. Five rock sentries proudly standing, lined up as pieces on a chess board. This harmony did not however stand the test of time, a quarrel opposed one of them to his other brothers. The fifth brother went into exile and went south. He found refuge near Nosy Aranja where he anchored himself at the tip of Angadoka. This colorful legend is told by the oldest inhabitants of the Mitsio islands, guardians of the ancestral knowledge...

The Antankarana kingdom

Among the 18 ethnies which make up the Malagasy nation, the Antankarana are certainly those who put up the fiercest resistance to the advanced of Merina unification forces lead by king Radama the first in the 19th century. They were helped by the outstanding natural protection offered by their kingdom. They sought refuge in the Ankarana mountain , a real maze of eroded lapiaz calcium. Fly over this natural master piece which witnessed great moments in the history of the Antankarana people.
